Civic Opera House

 

The Lyric Opera of Chicago performs in the Ardis Krainik Theatre of the Civic Opera House, built in 1929 by the architectural firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst & White.

 

Lyric Opera of Chicago is recognized internationally as one of the great opera companies of our time. Its artistic standards are universally admired. Over the course of the company's 54-year history, Lyric Opera of Chicago has consistently offered its patrons a world-class roster of singers, conductors, directors, designers, choreographers, and dancers in a wide-ranging repertoire.


The company’s eight-opera season starts in late September and concludes in late March, offering 80 performances of opera classics and 20th-century repertoire. Several world premieres have also been presented at Lyric over the years. Each season Lyric audiences enjoy the world’s greatest singers in productions that are spectacular musically, dramatically, and visually.

Hours:

For the 2008-09 season, evening performances begin at 7:30 pm, except Opening Night (6 pm), Lulu (7 pm), and Tristan (6 pm). Matinee performances begin at 2 pm, except Tristan (1 pm).

Admission:

Tickets range from $32 to $197. Check webiste for information regarding NExT -- Lyric Opera's discount ticket program for full-time college students.

The Opera House is accessible to physically disabled persons with elevator service to all floors except the lower level Opera Club. The Ardis Krainik Theatre contains seating that is accessible to persons in wheelchairs, as well as seats with removable armrests. The Opera House has automatic door openers on exterior doors, and accessible drinking fountains and public telephones. A TTY phone is available in the Box Office for outgoing calls only. Restroom facilities for female patrons with disabilities are located on all levels of the Opera House except the lower level Opera Club. For male patrons, these facilities are located on all levels except the lower level Opera Club and the sixth floor. Infrared assistive listening devices for persons desiring amplification, or high powered opera glasses for the visually impaired, are available at no cost at any open checkroom.
